Wollongong Poses Midfield Threat For The Sharks

SUTHERLAND defender Danial Cummins said Wollongong's midfield would pose a strong threat in Sunday night's NSW Premier League season opener at WIN Stadium.

After having spent the last two summers with Wollongong before becoming part of the mass exodus from the club at the end of last season, Cummins signed with a Sharks side that will hold a marked advantage over the Wolves in terms of experience.

The tough-tackling defender said containing the Wolves' midfield would be one of the keys to success.

"Wollongong should be pretty strong in the midfield, they have Dustin Wells, Balla Conde and Daniel Aliffi who are all good players," he said.

Aliffi and Wells both played for Wollongong in the old national league while Conde was a flatmate of Cummins when the duo played in Singapore.

Cummins forms part of a three-man Sutherland defensive unit that will be well known to Wollongong football fans.

George Souris is one of the most popular players to have pulled on a Wolves shirt while Jack Sobczyk spent the final years of the old national league with Parramatta Power.

Injuries have been a big problem for Sutherland during the pre-season with striker Omar Obeid (knee) Matthew Hunter (broken ribs, punctured lung) and Nenos Bobo (wrist) out of action.

The Wolves failed to win a game during the pre-season and conceded five goals in each of their last two outings. Coach Eddie Tesoro will be looking to shore up the defence at training this week.

Sunday's match will kick-off at 6pm.
