WOLLONGONG Wolves defender Danial Cummins hopes the club turned the tide with its 3-1 win over Sydney Olympic at Belmore Sports Ground on Sunday night.

Cummins, fellow defender Ben Blake and keeper Zlatko Joseski were singled out for praise by coach John Turner after repelling just about everything Olympic were able to thrown at them.

A week after conceding four goals in a poor loss to Manly United, Wollongong got the ball rolling with their first meaningful victory of 2007.

"We are all a bit relieved to finally get three points," Cummins said.

"There was probably a little more desperation there from us, but we also are now getting to a stage where we know how each other plays."

Prior to helping the Wolves win as a team, Cummins had to win a personal battle to secure a spot in the starting side.

"I knew it would be tough because I arrived with a few extra kilos and as a result of that was behind the eight ball," he said.

"I knew I wouldn't be first choice but also knew that I would get my chance, I just didn't think it would have come this early."

Off-season signing Matt Hunter was expected to partner Ben Blake at the back in round one, but a hamstring injury gave Cummins the chance he was looking for.

Wollongong will play a friendly against A-League club Sydney FC at Judy Masters Oval tomorrow night as part of their preparations for Sunday's home match against Sydney United.
